Makai Golf Club at the St. Regis Princeville Resort on Kauai's North Shore has reopened for play after a multi-million dollar renovation. Robert Trent Jones Jr., who originally designed Makai, also oversaw the renovation. The project included the reconfiguration of greens complexes, reshaping of the bunkers, cart-path work and upgrading the practice facility.

Pound-for-pound, Kauai's golf scene is as good as any in Hawaii, boasting less than 10 total golf courses but for what it does have, it does very well. Less populous than Maui and Oahu, Kauai has a slow vibe with no real large towns and lots of scenery.

On Wednesday, Dec. 16 WestJet Airlines began twice-weekly flights to Lihue Airport on Kauai (LIH) from Vancouver including introductory fares starting at $349. WestJet also has a dozen flights weekly from Vancouver to Honolulu. Inter-island flights on multiple airlines make the hop to Kauai easy and inexpensive.

In the fall of 2008, Makai Golf Club initiated a multi-million-dollar renovation project overseen by Robert Trent Jones II, who designed the original Makai layout. The golf course construction phase has been completed, and the project is now in the grow-in phase. Makai G.C. is currently closed, with reopening planned for January 2010.

Princeville was originally conceived as Hawaii's first golf resort community and offers two courses: Makai and the Prince. Truth be told, people don't travel halfway around the world to play Makai, they come to play the Prince course, which is regularly lauded as the top golf course in Hawaii.

Poipu Bay Golf Course is built upon rolling terrain, with an abundance of undulation on the fairways. The putting surfaces - as do all putting surfaces in Hawaii - have some tricky breaks. And boy are you glad when the wind is at your back.
