The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course on Maui
The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course in Kahului opened in 1999 and was rated by many publications as one of the best new golf courses of the year. It remains one of Hawaii's best-kept secrets, unattached from a larger resort complex like the Kapalua Resort to the west on Maui.
The golf course was designed by architect Robin Nelson, a familiar name around the Islands of Aloha. At Maui Lani, Nelson sought to create a links-style design on the tumbling terrain, right down to the nine-out, nine-in routing, within a whiff of the Pacific Ocean. The golf course sits in the central valley of Maui between two volcanoes, where millions of years of volcanic activity and coastal breezes formed the sand dunes.
